My father, Captain George Rarey of the 379th Fighter Squadron, 362nd Fighter Group, was killed in action in France flying his P-47 a few weeks after D-day. He was a fine cartoonist and kept sketchbook journals of the life of the pilots. These treasures were kept for me by my mother and together we are publishing a book of them in May of 1996. One of his drawings is in the Air Corps Memorabilia section of this site, as well as a link to a web site devoted to his artwork and writings that I have put up.

My dad also designed and painted insignias on the P-47s in the squadron. In this picture you can see his insignia behind him, "Damon's Demon," named after me.

In 1994, I was searching unsuccessfully for surviving members of my father's squadron, when someone gave me Annie Mix's and AWON's number. She immediately guided me to the right place, and I contacted all the men who flew with my dad. I was able to send them copies of his drawings, which they hadn't seen in 50 years. They in turn have provided commentary for the book of drawings that we are bringing out. I'm very greatful to Annie for her guiding spirit and the services that she has provided.
